This is so entertaining on so many levels. Watching this was like a rollercoaster ride of respect and laughter. High waisted pant, SNAP juggling hilarity aside Japan was one of the first foreign countries to really "get" hip hop culture. Anyone named GRAND MASTER YOSHI definately deserve some props, but damn! I've been meaning to post about one of my favourite manga /anime titles "GEGEGE NO KITARO" for over a year now and after hearing about the release of a blockbuster live action movie adaptation in Japan I figure it's about that time...

KITARO started as a highly successful children's "YOKAI" manga in the late 50's.
At the time, the yokai genre was very popular with the kids in post-war Japan and KITARO was one of many monster manga. YOKAI are basically ghosts & goblins of Japanese folk lore that come in all sorts of crazy variations from one-eyed umbrellas that follow people to beautiful women with hideous monster mouths hidden on the back of their heads. Most of them are more amusing than disturbing.

KITARO is a kind of 1/2 yokai boy who was born in a graveyard. He has a big emo fringe that covers an empty eye socket where his father, MEDAMA OYAJI (Literally "Eyeball Daddy") likes to hang out when he isn't bathing in a rice bowl full of boiling water. KITARO's powers include shooting spikes out of his hair and magical GETTA (Japanese wooden sandles) that he can launch at enemies. He works with his gang of YOKAI friends to stop bad YOKAI from terrorizing the human world.

More often than not, the trouble has something to do with KITARO's mischevious best friend "NEZUMI OTOKO" ("Rat Boy"). His other main sidekicks are "NEKO MUSUME" ("Cat Girl"), who chases Rat Boy at any given chance, and the coolest ghost in the world (besides BOO & the PACMAN ghosts), "ITTAN MOMEN" a really long piece of cloth with eyes and arms who can fly KITARO and friends around on his back.

It's a classic manga with lots of the humour and spooky charm you would expect from a character like author/illustrator SHIGERU MIZUKI. He's like the creepy but loveable, crazy one-armed storytelling Grandpa of Japan.

After the huge success of the manga, an anime series was produced in the 60's followed by another in the 70's, again in the 80's, another in the 90's and according to wikipedia, there's another one on the way this year. KITARO's also starred in a few video game iterations over the years. I managed to pick up a very cute but very freakin difficult SNES game in Akihabara but don't think I ever cleared the 2nd level!!

GEGEGE NO KITARO SNES GAME

Apart from some cult popularity in a few countries like Spain where a dubbed version made it to tv in the 80's, KITARO has never really made it outside of Japan. With it's traditional monsters and Japanese humour it's creator never imagined it would interest foreign viewers and the fact that none of the series or their many spinoff animated features have been released on dvd to date means there isn't alot available online either.

Hopefully, all that is about to change. Following the huge success of TAKASHI MIIKE's excellent 2005 film "YOKAI DAISENSO" ("THE GREAT YOKAI WAR" See poster above left) which featured many of the yokai made famous by KITARO including a cameo by MOMEN, not to mention the fact that KITARO is firmly rooted in Japanese Culture with the KITARO MUSEUM in MIZUKI's hometown of SAKAI MINATO remaining a very popular tourist destination, the inevitable has happened. A big budget live action GEGEGE NO KITARO movie (See poster top right) has been released and apparently it's killing it at the box office.

The man like AOI continues to melt headphones & explode backpacks all over Brisbane with his critical beatdowns. This instrumental jam has been on daily rotation for me lately. I picked up the 7" of "SIRENS"...the first single off DIZZEE RASCAL's new LP "M4THS & 3NGL1SH" about a month ago. If you havent' heard it already, it's a big oldschool sub-bass, guitar stab & (duh) siren filled monster that gets borderline "rage against the machine" (that's not a good thing people!) at the end but manages to escape being too cheezy. I like.

And in the same month, WILEY released his follow up to "TREADING ON THIN ICE". "I've been listening to the promo of "PLAYTIME IS OVER" for a few weeks now and it's sounding real nice. WILEY's production just gets better & better and this album plays great from start to finish. Here's one of the more bangin' tracks, "GANGSTERS". I'm buying this as soon as I can get my hands on the vinyl. It's out on BIG DADA.

BREAKDANCING MIDGETS & TOKYO HIJINKS

Happy New Year from the land of Asahi, Maid Cafes and cheap allnight, all you can drink Karaoke! I`m back in Tokyo for a few weeks on a much needed vacation. It`s been almost a year since my visa expired and I had to leave this crazy town and it`s great to be back. I`ve been visiting all my favourite spots, blowing cash on "essentials" like 50cm tall 1kg mario figures, alarm clocks shaped like Famicom (Japanese NES), ltd edition "I LOVE TOKYO" Adidas kicks and all kinds of other crap in between catching up with a bunch of awesome peeps that I`ve been missing like crazy, drinking as much Kirin Lager & Ebisu beer as my liver can stand, stuffing my face with delicious Japanese food, playing Playstation 3 (which may not be out in Australia until as late as October 07 depending on whether Sony can get their shit together or not) and enjoying the 9th wonder of the world... Japanese TV. I`ve even managed to drop a couple of DJ Sets including a joint effort with my #1 Japanese homebwoy Tetsuya on the cuts at UPTOWN 125, a new club in Funabashi that my friends are managing... click the invisible link for details if yr in the neighbourhood anytime soon.

Anyway, enough about me... lets talk about midgets... breakdancing midgets... Tamil Indian breakdancing midgets and their connection to one of the dopest abstract/underground hip hop tracks I own.

I while back, I posted a mix of dark-ish downtempo/abstract hip-hop and electronica called "MUSIC MELT A FROZEN HEART" <<< click to go to original post (with re-linked mp3`s for download). There`s a track in the mix called "Maintaining Izmatic Degrees" by an MC called IZM DA MAD SOUL that has this really DEEEEP, original production and some really dope, intelligent verses. It was from one of the 2 "CUE`S HIP HOP SHOP" compilations and I always wondered what happened to that MC. So... last night, in amongst all the Nigerian Bank Fraud Spam emails I get this e-mail from a cat named Rolando Chavez...

"how are,my name is Fresh Ro ,I produced that izm da mad soul track years ago that you have on a Cd ,he recently got out of jail from being locked up 10 years and i have a 4 track single coming out with different styles,I am trying to get the word out. you can hear it on my page myspace.com/freshrohis new name is check 1 da ill lyfe"

So... I hit his myspace and I suggest you do the same. 10 years is a big chunk of time be be locked up but obviously Izm, now CHECK 1 DA ILL LYFE, put it to good use because his bars on the cut "MY FLOW" are still dripping with skill and there`s not one fake-ass-gangsta-gun-talkin` cliche in sight. FRESH RO`s production is on the downtempo tip and he definately has his own style and the skills to back it up. His vibe reminds me of some of those Ubiquity artists like "NOBODY"... going from light chilled grooves to some darker places & never resorting to straight loopage. There`s another cut on his myspace called "UNTITLED" with an mc called PENUCKLE that I liked too... his flow kinda reminded me of ROOTS MANUVA but a little tighter. I`d like to hear more of his stuff. Oh... and that midget connection? I got this mind-destroyingly amazing video off FRESH RO`s Myspace page! THANK YOU!!!

KAHIMI KARIE IS A KITTEN...

One of the best things about mp3 blogs is being exposed to great music you may never have encountered otherwise & that's exactly what happened a year or so ago when I first heard KAHIMI KARIE's "WHAT ARE YOU WEARING?". It's one of those songs that always ends up in my mp3 player & I never get tired of its combination of super sweet, almost whispered j-pop vocals & lofi electronics (complete with whacky vocoder).

For some reason it never occurred to me to seek more of her music until a couple of weeks ago & after a bit of googling I found out she's actually released quite lot of stuff. According to the bio on DISCOGS.COM she started out as a music photographer in Tokyo, then around 1994, CORNELIUS, who she was dating at the time, asked her to sing some tracks for his friend's label & her music career grew from there. KAHIMI KARIE sings in Japanese, French and English and the backing music ranges from 60' pop to jazz, lounge, electro house, rock & more but whatever the genre, her irresistable vocals and playful lyrics always conjure up this dreamy headspace.

You could just as easily imagine her playng in some bohemian cafe scene in a 60's French film, as you could at some ultra-hip party in Shibuya. For all its glamour and chic, her music somehow remains unpretentious & genuine... even when she's singing about folllowing a girl down the street because she has nice shoes on "Clip Clap". So here are my 4 favourite tracks from the 20 or so that I've managed to download. I hope you dig them as much as I do...

I was just going to post this short (& badly written) dvd review I wrote for a local free magazine but I found the whole movie on Google Video so... enjoy!

When Legendary Japanese Director, Akira Kurosawa's "RASHOMON" was released in America in 1952, critics were so taken by it's powerful storytelling & masterful direction that they created the "Academy Award for Best Foreign Film" category in its honour.

Even after 56 years the film's message hasn't lost any of it's impact or relevance. The influence of it's innovative multiple-perspective narrative style can still be felt today in films like "Pulp Fiction" & "The Usual Suspects". RASHOMON is a fascinating & thought provoking look at the darker side of human nature and the subjectivity of truth.

On the highways of ancient Japan, 3 men take shelter from a heavy rainstorm in an abandoned temple... a young priest, a woodcutter and a commoner. The priest and the woodcutter then recount the horrible tale of a trial they just witnessed as they wait for the storm to pass.

Through various flashbacks we hear about the murder of a Samurai on a forest road and the rape of his wife, through the eyes of the four people involved... the Woodcutter, a bandit, the dead Samurai's wife, and even the ghost of the Samurai himself.

Each person has a different version of the events and it is left to the viewer to decide who, if anybody, is telling the truth. Therein lies the genius of Rashomon. Instead of spoon feeding you an answer, it leaves you to develop your own conclusions.

It's one of those films that has stayed in my subconscious since I first saw it 16 years ago and watching this digitally remastered version in all its beautifully cinematographed black & white glory brings back the same goosebumps as it did then. The DVD also features Interviews with the original crew and a documentary on the Cinematographer along with some outtakes & other goodies.

Like "The Usual Suspects" it requires a little more concentration than the average film but it really is essential viewing. Don't sleep on this one any longer.

ALONE IN THE DARK [?]

Here are some really nice tracks to drift off to sleep listening to or to watch the stars by...

First up is a really pretty, almost beatless track by JEGA from his excellent 2nd lp from a few years back on PLANET MU, "GEOMETRY". Look for his ever-delayed follow up album to drop sometime next year if we're lucky.

This is a super-sweet instrumental hip hop track from a few years back by DECEPTIKON. I love the way the delicate music box melody samples work off the beats. If you like what you hear, he's got a couple more tracks & a live set from 2004 up on his site... or you could go buy some..."LOST SUBJECT" is a good place to start.

WAY OF THE SAMURAI - DECEPTIKON

This track starts out glitched up like a relaxation cd that's had a run in with a belt sander before unfolding into a sweet uplifting synthscape. This is the bgm that plays when you roll up the universe in WE LOVE KATAMARI.

BLUE ORB - ? WE LOVE KATAMARI OST

Another track off the "SACRED SYMBOLS OF MU" comp... this time it's EDIT chopping & filtering DAEDELUS' beats to great effect... I can't get enough of this lately... something very addictive about those filtered dot-matrix-printer-esque hooks

One of my favourite DABRYE tracks... this one rolls along combining minimal dubby electro basslines with hip hop beats & dope melodies.

OUTERSPACE - DELIRIUM

These guys are a really interesting Latino hip-hop crew that dropped a few nice tracks on WORDSOUND back in the day, collabos with SPECTRE aka THE ILL SAINT + a 10" on the BLACK HOODZ imprint then kind of became prodige's (how do u do that e with the thing?) of similarly warped masterminds, JEDI MIND TRICKS. Real dark atmospheres and abstract flows about conspiracy theories & aliens and whatnot. This is actually some really cool spoken word by a guy named RICH MEDINA over some really moody dark jazz-hip-hop hybrid instro from the start of their debut LP "JEDI MIND TRICKS PRESENT: OUTERSPACE"

BURIAL - SOUTHERN COMFORT

Just getting into this LP in the last few weeks... if you haven't heard it... it's a kind of dark soundscape / minimal electronic / dubsteppy sound... that whole kinda nihilistic futurist vibe next generation of production affected by the bladerunner aesthetic blah blah = i like it

FUTURE SOUND OF LONDON - TIRED

Not one of my favourite tracks but it's off one of my favourite albums... FUTURE SOUND OF LONDON's ISDN live LP. I've bought like 5 copies of that cd in the last 10 years because I always want people to hear it. A M A Z I N G ! One day I'll post the track that gave this blog it's name but for now, listen to this.

CANNIBAL OX - FROM THE PLANET OF EAT

One of the few new tracks that came out on last year's filler "RETURN OF THE OX". I wasn't expecting much out of anyone on DEF JUX lately but this track is pretty dope and up to the high standard of the cold vein album. Regardless of any solo shenanigans over the last couple years, it's pretty clear that VAST AIRE + VORDUL + EL PRODUCTO still equals DOPE RAW HIP-HOP.

COMPANY FLOW - INFO KILL

Another example of what was so fucking great about COMPANY FLOW. The strings on this are gutwrenching. Classic.

KAMIKAZE - GHETTO KYOTE

One of my favourite grime instros to date. This DAVINCHE alias track has the simplest sweeping melancholy synth-string sweep melody when I first heard it I thought it sounded like some schoolkid screwing around with a casio (not that that's a bad thing) but it's much cleverer than that. I love those reversed kicks in the beat too! Anyone know of a good vocal on this riddim? I've heard alot of crap ones or badly recorded freestyles but nothing solid.

MORE FIRE CREW FT DIZZEE RASCALL - STILL THE SAME

I really like this track... another pre "BOY IN DA CORNER" DIZZEE track. I like the production on it too. Just picked this up on 12" last month after playing the mp3 regularly for years. (^___^)

RICCI RUCKER & MIKE BOO - NEW DIRT

I don't know if enough people know about MIKE BOO & RICCI RUCKER and some of the other turntable musicians out there doing really interesting shit in the realm of music production that is usually about as far as you can get from timbaland / neptunes / jus blaze style hip hop. This one is a really heavily distorted slow experimental beats.

Highly recommended by JOHN EDEN on DISSENSUS, it took me months to get hold of a copy of this track and it's still an edited version I think. Another highly infectious and fun track. Pure jump up madness on a really awesome riddim. Search for the film clip on YouTube... it's so good!

A big fat bashment rocker from BIG DADA's resident sound scientist, WAYNE LOTEK & friends. I love this track.

Moody stuff from the excellent underground dnb/jungle producer who's been threatening to drop an lp on PLANET MU for too long now (hopefully it'll come out soon). Not so many beats in this one, but it's good stuff. From PLANET MU's really really good "SACRED SYMBOLS OF MU" compilation that came out recently.

Speaking of MU, this guy is signed to them now, too. But this is a track of his "ABDUCTION OF BARRY" EP.This is some slick, rugged, shadowy, sound-monster shit. The beats slip back and forth between the two hemispheres of your brain as filtered dsp madness and SPECTRE-like key samples whirl around you. OK, as promised... here's another vintage mix...circa 2001 / 02 maybe? It was just after the "DO YOU KNOW SQUAREPUSHER" LP came out. This one was edited together on my mac for my girlfriend at the time (wassup neko!) to play in a hipster clothing store she was working at. I used to play occasionally as DJ L.A.M.E. (as in the mp3 codec cos half my tracks were downloads, and as in... I can't mix... check the self-dissing outro). I have since evolved into the next phase of my pokemon-like existence & dropped the name. Usually my DJ LAME sets were filled with noisy breakcore, industrial dub & abstract hip-hop, but this one was my first attempt at something a little more friendly & clubby (which is more like my current style).

HAPPY BLOGDAY? DRTY SHDWS PRJKT blog turns 1 year old today. To celebrate, I'm gonna be re-uploading the mp3's that alot of you missed out on from the early posts.I'll be updating the dead links in the original posts. Check the comments in this post to see what's back on line. I've also got a classic mix from the vaults for anyone that liked the style of the drunken model trainwreck cd and a bunch of newer stuff to post.

To the people that come here on the regular... and the ones that comment & let me know I'm not doing this for nothing... thanks! I'm gonna try and post more regularly. It's been a very crazy 12 months... I was in Japan teaching english for the first half but now I'm back in Australia doing Graphic Design & a hell of alot busier. Gone are the days when I could sleep in until 3pm then go teach some nice Japanese people for 4 hours then go to all night karaoke! It's all alarms beeping at 6:30am and dragging myself off to work bright n early these days... back to reality. It makes it harder to find time to post but I'm gonna make an effort to update weekly again with mp3's and maybe more frequent posts about non-music stuff inbetween.

In 1999 Sony released a really cute Playstation game called VIB RIBBON. I bought it in Japan last year very cheap and fell in love with it. You play as a white outline drawing of a bunny rabbit (always vector style against a black background in a weird semi 3D perspective) and make your way along the "ribbon"... a vibrating line like a soundwave with various obstacles you need to clear using different button combos. Each time you mess up an obstacle the lines become shakier and more chaotic and eventually you devolve into a little worm-like creature if you miss too many. If you have a good run of no mistakes you get a crown, wings and an umbrella. All the obstacles are pretty much linked to the tempo of the soundtrack (which is super cute!!!!) AND ... you can put in your own cd's to provide new soundtracks and generate new ribbons from your music... sometimes with good results... sometimes, impossibly crazy (try playing a cd of 8 bit mario music and it goes apesh*t!!). It plays the tracks off your cd from slowest bpm to fastest (kind of) so the levels get harder with each track. Some very cool programming and a really fresh visual style that hasn't dated at all.

This game absolutely rocks and just like Katamari it is really original, creative and fun with a dope soundtrack. I've been trying to get hold of the full soundtrack for ages but I haven't found it yet. I do have an mp3 of my favourite track though (thanks to some serious googling and a like minded french blogger whose link I've lost - thankyou). It's by a Japanese duo (I think) called "LAUGH & BEATS" but they recorded this soundtrack under the name "LAUGH & PEACE". It's a really sweet song with a nice minimal electronic beat and cute japanese girl vocals. the lyrics are abut being sad but the song is full of sweetness & dreamy innocence... A kind of weird mix of conflicting emotions that seems more real to me than alot of music lately (even though it's just a pop song on a video game soundtrack).

You can read the LYRICS courtesy of CYAN who says "Call me crazy, but I think this is a very very sad song. For me it stands for the pains of monotony, the struggle for answers, and the longing for companionship. Perhaps I just read too much into it.......probably, but this song really gets to me" yup... anyway... I hope you like it...

LAUGH & PEACE - POLAROID

Apparently this game was made by the same person who came up with Parappa the Rapper (more about this another time) & they made a couple of sequels. One has the same rabbit but instead of music you use your own photos to generate the levels & it doesn't look so interesting but the other one, "MOJIB RIBBON" looks surreal. A little rapping character who writes nonsensical japanese rhymes in kanji with a big calligraphy brush. I strongly urge anyone who likes cute strange stuff to watch the videos HERE.

Sorry peoples...I'm still on vacation from blogging... still house hunting & internet-less. Still addicted to this game although it's not just the demo anymore... I got given a free copy by mr TIM (you rock my universe) who just had his first baby boy... OMEDETTO GOZAIMASU! I can't post any music right now but I highly recommend u track down a copy of the "WE LOVE KATAMARI" soundtrack because it's incredible. And if you don't know what I'm on about you gotta go to the WE LOVE KATAMARI SITE.

2_DRUNK_2_BLOG+OTHER.EXCUSES

I'm taking a little time off from the blog for various reasons...my 5 year old piece-of-purple-plastic-crap iMac has finally become the giant paperweight it was always destined to be so I can't even rip the tracks for the next post at the moment. Props to the apple team for designing a desktop computer that's even less upgradeable than a laptop. Not to mention I just started a new graphic design job with pretty long hours & I'm in the middle of moving house (Again). And then there's the re-occurring hang-overs & the fact that my PS2 addiction is back in full effect.

Check back in a couple weeks and things should be back up to the usual low standard... in the meantime grab this dancehall mix from Australia's "STREET LEVEL SOUND" crew. Their first mix late last year has done some serious revolutions in my cd player and I'm sure this one will be the same. STREET LEVEL SOUND VOL. 2

Okay... the stupidly themed posts continue as a way to help me choose from the thousands of tracks I could post on here. Today's theme? Kung Fu, baby!!! Having grown up on a steady diet of saturday afternoon martial arts videos courtesy of my cool-as-f*&k big brother, TRENT (^_^).. everything from BRUCE LEE to SHO KOSUGI ninja movies, CHUCK NORRIS flicks and a bunch of more questionable 80's American NINJA MADNESS... today I'm posting 3 tunes by 3 verbal black belts from JAMAICA and the U.S.

First up is Jamaican born American singer CARL DAVIS' 1974 one hit wonder, "KUNG FU FIGHTING". Click the link for some background on this 9,000,000 selling disco pop oddity that was originally recorded in 10 minutes as a throw away b-side. For all it's kitchiness & novelty value I still think it's a funky ass tune that deserves some respect.

A couple of years later Kung-Fu mania had spread around the world thanks to BRUCE LEE breaking martial arts movies into the mainstream and an awesome young MC from Jamaica by the name of DILLINGER decided to cash in on the action with this good vibes dancehall party cut "NATTY KUNG FU". This is a great tune that always puts a smile on my face.

DILLINGER wasn't the only cat in JA feelin' the Kung-Fu vibrations... in fact his track was most likely inspired by the legendary LEE PERRY & THE UPSETTERS 1975 release "KUNG FU MEETS THE DRAGON". A dub funk tribute to Bruce Lee movies. I reeeeally wanted to post some tracks off this but after hours of searching through cd's of mp3's I had to give up on finding my copy. If anyone has a track they could post in the comments I'd be very grateful.

Last but not least, the mighty SIZZLA gets kicked out of kung fu school for refusing to break dubplates over his head and opens his own KALONJI KARATE DOJO. SIZZLA's voice is as unique and powerful as ever on this jump-up dancehall vocal over 2002's smash hit "MARTIAL ARTS" RIDDIM . A departure from his tender roots reggae styles as he threatens to "SLEW DEM WIT KARATE" over this dramatic riddim. Bad-mind watchout fore yi catch chop to di throat!!!!

I could've followed up SIDE A with some classic Hip Hop DJ dis tracks like DIMPLES D's "SUCKA DJ'S" (which was also produced by MARLEY MARL) but 1: I can't find my copy and 2: I've got some much crazier tunes for you on some fast noisy "DESTROY ALL DJ's" isht that I've been looking for a dumb excuse to post for a while so...

Welcome to the flipside... to quote DIZZEE RASCALL "Ain't no love ting here..." It's the backlash... How many millions of "DeeJay"s are there in the world today? Posing behind decks in laser lit clubs like they're motherf*&kin' DEREK ZOOLANDER... seamlessly mixing crappy house tunes at the same bpm for big wads of cash... getting free drinks they don't deserve for playing the same crap week after week! Making money off mixes of other people's tunes cos they can't make their own! WANKERS, the lot of 'em! LOL!! [( ^ - ^ )]

But seriously, as a self confessed CRAP BEDROOM DJ, I am highly amused by tracks that attack bad djs. Especially when they're by amazing freaks like CANADA'S FAVOURITE POLISH BORN SON, BOGDAN RACZYNSKI with hilarious lyrics like "why don'cha go back to playin that MC HAMMER shit... you f&*ckin' shit!" etc over his patented hectic frenzy of beats and bleeps. This track's off his "THINKING OF YOU" LP on REPHLEX. Ever had yr ass kicked by a guy in a dress? LET THE BEATDOWN BEGIN...

BOGDAN RACZYNSKI - FUCK YOU DJ

Next up another Canadian, AARON FUNK, takes the hate one step further on this brutal chaotic ragga shit storm from his "HIGGINS ULTRA LOW GLUEFUNK HITS" LP on PLANET MU. For me the fun really starts around 1:30 on this one but the build up is part of its intensity. Try bpm'ing this track! "NOW WE MAKE SOME DJ FEEL MOST UN-COM-FOR-TA-BLE!!!!".

VENETIAN SNARES - DEADMAN DJ

Meanwhile... on the other side of the world in a little country called BRITAIN where hockey is a sport played by girls in long socks on a grass field that doesn't (usually) involve right hooks to the face, a young man by the name of DYNAMITE MC is expressing his slightly less aggressive ideas on how to interact with a Disc Jockey over a BIG BOUNCY UK GARAGE BEAT by TNT (?)... if you're not into abrasive breakcore / drill'n'bass like the tracks above, this is the one for you. It's a certified club banger & DYNAMITE's rhymes are as fly and party friendly as ever. You can pick this up on his 2004 debut LP "WORLD OF DYNAMITE". He's also done a bunch of great collabos with hip-hop, d&b, garage & dancehall producers (I'm still trying to get hold of the BIONIC RAS RIDDIM LP for his "ALL NITE PARTY" version as heard on the excellent HEATWAVE MIX) DON'T SLEEP ON THIS ONE!!!

There are hundreds of tracks out there about DJ's. Back in the early days of Hip Hop it was the MC's job to keep the party people hyped and big up their DJ. The DJ was the one the people came to hear. Without DJ's hip hop wouldn't exist. So here are three dope cuts dedicated to the people that really keep the party moving...

First track is a straight up classic from 1985. Lengendary DJ/Producer MARLEY MARL decided to grab some of that spotlight for himself so he teamed up with MC SHAN & dropped this awesome solo debut. This track's been sampled and played by just about every turntablist that ever put needle to groove in the last decade & it ain't hard to tell why > "All you other DJ's are a bunch of jerks! Marley give 'em an example how a DJ works..."

DJ MARLEY MARL FT MC SHAN - MARLEY MARL SCRATCH

Next up... some time in the 90's, GANGSTARR pay homage to DJ's with this reworking of one of the original DJ tracks (1983's "PLAY THAT BEAT MR DJ" by G.L.O.B.E & WHIZ KID). I don't know if DJ Premier produced this one or not but whoever did KILLS it (as in bad meaning GOOD!) & GURU's flow sounds so good over this oldschool production.

And finally... a couple years back, true school B-Boy AKROBATIK got together with DJ FAKTS ONE and dropped this awesomely crafted dj-name-drop fest. I love this track! The beats are HUGE and the 80's synth melody mixed with all that BASS, FAKTS ONE's dope cuts and AKROBATIK's typically ingenious & energetic rhyme style are sure to see this looked back on as a classic in years to come. And how good is AK's last line!?!?

If there was a bloggers hall of fame, T.P.B. would've got my vote without a doubt! Thankfully, my other favourite hip hop blog, UNKUT.COM aka STEADY BOOTLEGGIN' aka A TRIBUTE TO IGNORANCE is still in full effect. It's a f&%king GOLDMINE of knowledge, humour and awesome hip hop I never would've heard anywhere else. Like alota other bomboclaats out there... until 5 or 6 years ago my knowledge of reggae, dub & dancehall didn't go much beyond diggin' some BOB MARLEY and SLY & ROBBIE lp's I'd heard. Then I heard DAWN PENN's "NO NO NO" in an old DJ SPOOKY MIX and I flipped out. Around the same time I started getting into a little ragga jungle (working back from the DHR amens I'd come to love) and was going back from the jungle tracks to find the original BUJU BANTON, BOUNTY KILLER, ELEPHANT MAN etc reggae & dancehall tracks.

It wasn't long untill I fell in love with the echo chamber of dub, the soulwarming sounds of roots reggae and the big bounce & energy of dancehall. I've been exploring the sounds slowly ever since (along with a million other genres) and in reggae I've found a soundtrack to a headspace I was sadly lacking for a while. A place of positive realism... where the world isn't perfect and your situation may be bad but life goes on and if you're going to enjoy it, sometimes you just need to let go of all the stress and insecurity, pressures and problems and just BREATHE, SING, JAM, DANCE, SMOKE, DRINK and RELAX.

I mentioned DAWN PENN but another artist I fell in love with straight away was SISTER NANCY. If you haven't heard her classic "BAM BAM" track in a mix or a compilation somewhere by now you must be living in a vacuum. Or you might've heard the "LITTLE MORE OIL" track she did with DJ/RUPTURE on his "SPECIAL GUNPOWDER" LP. Anyway... last year I was seeking out some older SISTER NANCY tracks on SLSK and I ended up with a track by a 12yr old sounding MC named BILLY BOYO... he sounded so innocent but wise and he delivered this AWESOME track over some great dubbed out reggae by the ROOTS RADICS with the chorus of "one spliff a day keep di evil away".

He didn't release a lot of material in his short career but he's thought of as a really slept on talent. This 7" A-side is the only track of his I've heard but I plan to buy more when I can. So here it is along with the title track off Sister Nancy's "ONE, TWO..." LP.

I came accross this mix when I was going through the boxes of my cds & clothes that have been sitting in my sister's garage for a year and a half & to be honest, at first I had no memory of making it... with good reason.

Before I went to Japan I was living alone for the first time in my life. I had a crazy little apartment next door to one pub and accross the road from another. I was 15 minutes walk to the city and the main nightclub district & I could play music as loud as I liked without complaints. It was a great time for me. I had my computer, record player, cd players & a shitty little radio shack mixer permanently set up on my lounge room floor. I decided to start recording my weekly impromptu mixes (or mix sketches really) so I could listen back & re-make the good ones or at least learn something.

Every Friday night I would sit on my lounge room floor drinking beer or red wine & mixing from 9pm till around midnight. By the end I'd be half drunk and hyped to go out and meet my friends in the clubs. This cd is one of those drunken mix sessions. As always I use the term mix in the loosest wack bedroom dj sense of the word. I am just a selektah... it's all about the tracks for me because I STILL don't have cdjs or 1200s to match bpms & mix properly.

The mix starts out with the levels sounding a little shitty & tracks going end to end then as the alcohol seeps in I start to believe that I can beatmix with my mind & the trainwrecks begin (hopefully someone will get a laugh out of them) and the track selection takes a few strange turns (eurotrash girls? WTF?) /(-_-)\.

So, for the braver / more foolish among you... step into my drunken little world circa Feb 2004... crack open some beers... pack yr pipe...whatever... and get ready to feel a whole lot better about yourself at my expense!

TERMINAL DOPENESS!!!

Just in case anybody slept on this one... WAKE THE F*&K UP! This debut release came out late last year on new electronic/breakcore/etc label TERMINAL DUSK. "CRIMSON" is 100% quality and all new material. It's been way too long since anyone released a compilation of this standard. All the tracks are A-Side 12" devastators and melodic electronic genius. The next generation of Aphex/Squarepusher/Bogdan Raczynski-s (and a couple of new aliases perhaps) with some of the big bwoys of breakcore/jungle bizniss... Soundmurderer, Enduser and Shitmat on one compilation has got to be a good thing. Then there's Doormouse, 8 Frozen Modules and all the other talented producers on here. I don't wanna give to much of this one away so I'm fighting the temptation to post the big name tracks. Instead, here are 3 great tracks by artists I had never heard of before I got this album. It's Winter in Tokyo... no snow but it's getting pretty cold for me... around 3c-4c some nights. I was lying in bed under my blankets the other night listening to this mix for the first time in a while and I was really feeling it so I thought I'd post it. The mixing is nothing special (as usual) but there's some really nice music in there. I made it in 2002 not long after DJ SHADOW'S "PRIVATE PRESS" came out. I was listening to a lot of instrumental and underground hip-hop at the time as well as a lot of pretty electronica like BOARDS OF CANADA.

I guess I was really looking for music with genuine emotion and this mix is, with a few exceptions, a collection of tunes that pull yr heartstrings a little without crossing the line into melancholy. It's not a perfect selection but for me at least, it's one I imagine I'll still enjoy in 10 years time... driving late at night, chillin at home, drifting off to sleep, or easing into a Sunday morning.

DO YOU REMEMBER... DHR? (PART 1)

For anyone that doesn't know, the "story" goes like this... Alec Empire (Who had been releasing solo electronic and breakcore-ish material with mille plateaux and other labels), Hanin Elias and Carl Crack (R.I.P.) formed a digital punk band called ATARI TEENAGE RIOT around 1994 and supposedly got a record contract with EMI or some other label. They turned in an unreleasable album and used all the money to start their own independent label to release some of the awesome new hardcore electronic music that was happening in and around Berlin. That label was DIGITAL HARDCORE RECORDINGS.

While there were many other labels and artists making similar sounds at the time, through some shrewd marketing, connections or maybe luck, DHR managed to get unprecedented publicity for the breakcore genre but, much to the disgust/amusement of alot of other people, they always presented it as if they had invented it... (Alec Empire's ego is kinda ginormous). Whichever way you look at it... DHR was my first exposure to breakcore, and maybe alot of other people's as well, and led me to alot of great music in this genre. In the end, for various reasons, there was a rift between Empire and the bulk of the label's roster and everything kinda fell apart. The label still exists and they eventually signed some other artists but for me it was dead and buried after the release of Patric Catani's brutal "Attitude PC8" album around 2000. But what I want to reflect on is the music, not the history. Aside from ATARI TEENAGE RIOT (which, although they had some great tracks, was at times a little too contrived) there were some truly amazing artists coming out of the German scene.

One of them was DAVID HAMMER... first he was the soundman/recording engineer for DHR and later he started releasing his own incredible material under the name of SHIZUO. Raw twisting mashed up lo-fi beats and obscure movie samples from a cheap SP1200 were his trade mark but for me his sound is best desribed by his own term "FUCKSTEP". He released 1 album, the awesome "SHIZUO VS SHIZOR" (on DHR and GRAND ROYAL) and 5 or 6 singles & eps then disappeared. Alot of the tracks also featured ANNIKA (now half of COBRA KILLER) on vocals to great effect. I met his labelmate PATRIC CATANI in Australia a couple of years ago and one of the first things I asked him was "What happened to SHIZUO?" Apparently he's in some kind of noisy guitar band these days. I wish he was still producing tracks like these but... maybe he felt he'd taken it as far as it could go.

The first SHIZUO tracks I heard were two of the best... His awesome reworking of THE CRAMPS' "NEW KICK" was a perfect anthem for me at the time... I loved the original too but the cute girl vocals and the frantic distorted beats gave the song a whole new feeling.

And this epic off kilter beat storm still sounds fresh. "have you ever been kissed by a girl like this?"

My favourite track was off his "NEW KICK" EP but it ain't no B-SIDE!!! With Annika's cute, sexy vocals again and a skittering rollercoaster of a beat over a big bad bassline... indisputable proof that SHIZUO IS the man!!!

Some of my favourite DHR material came from their "DHR LTD" series... alot more random and experimental than the straight album releases. SHIZUO released a 17 track LTD LP called "FUCKSTEP '98" which was kind of like a live sampler jam/mash up session of some of his beats with a couple of tracks featuring Annika as well...

From what I've heard he was great live too but I never got to see it. All I have is this super low quality real media > cassette > mp3 I made of a 26 minute live show in the U.S. but it's worth listening to at least once.

O.G... ORIGINAL GEISHA?

I've been putting off this post idea for a while because I wanted to get a larger selection of tracks but I can't wait any longer... I love hip hop and I love the sound of traditional Japanese instruments like the SHAKUHACHI (long wooden flute), SHAMISEN (3 string guitar) & the KOTO (Japanese harp), so...

Today I've got 3 pieces of traditional Japanese music for you and 3 truly classic hip hop tracks with a strong Japanese influence (Musically speaking... none of the lyrics are about Japan). I'm gonna do a part 2 on this one at some point with some other tracks inspired or influenced by Japan and another on Japanese hip hop in the future but feel free to post some comments if any similar tracks come to mind.

Anyway, to kick it off, this song combines traditional vocal styles with Koto, Shakuhachi and Shamisen. Really pretty... check it out...

TRADITIONAL - MOON OVER TOKYO

Next comes an old favourite of mine from "DJ SPOOKY"'s ""RIDDIM WARFARE"" LP. This collabo with KILLAH PRIEST has one of the most epic downtempo hip hop instrumentals of all time. I love the contrast of the soft shakuhachi sounds and those big slow bass stabs. This rhyme is also a great example of Killah Priest's potential. It's a shame he doesn't flex the intellect more often, this is so much doper than his usual style.

Back to the cherry blossoms... This piece is all Koto (and shamisen maybe) and the name, "SAKURA" (cherry blossom) describes the music beautifully. If you have ever been to a Hanami party and sat under the cherry trees as thousands of petals float to the ground in the breeze you'll know what I mean, and if you haven't, just listen and I'm sure you can imagine.

And on to NY where GANG STARR created this incredible piece of hip hop. I could listen to this for days... no gats, no stick ups, just beautiful production with an awesome Koto hook and uplifting, poetic rhymes. Transcendental type isht. From their "MOMENT OF TRUTH" LP.

Last of the traditional pieces is this one... unacompanied Koto (I think)... very pretty with really intricate tempo and melody work that reminds me of a lot of great electronic music. I'm guessing the title means "the 8th level" but knowing my Japanese ability I'm probably wrong.

Which brings us to EAST FLATBUSH PROJECT's "TRIED BY 12". A classic, played by every hip hop dj under the sun, but with good reason. The Koto hook on this cut is straight up infectious... I love it. As you probably know, CHOCOLATE INDUSTRIES & NINJA TUNE released a REMIX LP with 12 electronic producers reworking this track... the highlights for me being the SQUAREPUSHER, KO-WRECK TECHNIQUE and FUNKSTORUNG remixes but I also love this one which didn't make the album but appeared later on the excellent "RAPID TRANSIT" compilation.

Too busy to post lately... gonna put some stuff up soon but in the meantime I'm bitin' links like pacman to make sure you're not sleeping on some hot mixes floating around at the moment...

First up, care of KID KAMELEON's blog, comes this fresh mix from N-RON & LEFTENENT called "THUNDERSOUND". Some serious slicing, dicing, mixing & blending of some GREAT TUNES produces a really original, heavy, mix of dancehall, abstract hip-hop, electronica, grime and more that's more like some evil-genius remix collabo between THE BUG, TIPPER and SQUAREPUSHER than some DIPLO bootymover throwdown, but would still kill a dancefloor. Walking around a dirty suburb in Tokyo at night, listening to this for the first time, all I could think to myself was "The future is now, motherfucker". GET IT HERE!!! Next up is the latest installment from eurocrunk masterminds, RADIO CLIT. "SEXY STAMINA" is their 8th show featuring STACS OF STAMINA on MC duties and birthday boy DJ TRON on the 1200's. Another hour of CLIT CLIT CRAZINESS and superdope underground club tracks / durrty south hip hop / grime / pop / and throw away 80's tracks for your listening pleasure . And some recent comments by JACE aka DJ/RUPTURE got me heading over to AARON SPECTRE's site for the first time in a while, where I re-downloaded his excellent "LIFE WE PROMOTE" mix. If you wanna hear some rugged raggajungle / breakcore / dubstep bizness expertly mixed and chopped with a little hip hop and the occasional metal guitar riff sprinkled in now and then for good measure, this is the mix for you. One of the best jungle mixes I've heard since SOUNDMURDERER's "WIRED FOR SOUND". This man is at the top of his game and he's sharing the badness RIGHT HERE (with tracklist) .

Lastly, from the mighty RAGGAJUNGLE.COM forums, comes this great strictly 7" dancehall mix from Australia's STREET LEVEL SOUNDSYSTEM. Superb track selection and great, minimal use of laser shots and sirens on this 56 tracks in 60 something minutes journey through some of the freshest riddims of late, with some classic sleng teng vibes thrown in the middle to round it out. HAPPY HALLOWEEN!!! A last minute bag of treats for anyone who comes clicking on my door today... Some dark electronic 1 ton dubness... some classic guitar-wielding skeletons from my closet, some avant-jazz weirdness and a few novelty tracks to fill out your last minute halloween party cd if you're like me and you haven't made it yet even though yr party is only hours away...

First up is the first encounter I ever had with APHEX TWIN. His hauntingly beautiful NINE INCH NAILS remix. I love this track.

Next, in a slightly similar vein, is MOU... a Japanese duo on some seriously heavy post-industrial dub bizniss on these two amazing tracks from the ELECTRIC LADYLAND 5 compilation on MILLE PLATEAUX. Epic doesn't begin to describe the power of this music... It comes on like an audio GODZILLA.

The first one is like a one and a half minute bad lsd trip battle between THE HIGH PRIEST and M SAAYID and the second is one of my favourite APC tracks ever. The finest in abstract lyrical treats...

Since I first saw "DONNIE DARKO" this one always reminds me of "FRANK", everyone's favourite crazy bunny but the song has nothing to do with the movie.

It's about that time... my favourite holiday is rapidly approaching and today I'm gonna kick off the first in a series of halloween posts. Round one is Hip Hop Halloween jams, and in the next couple of weeks I'll be posting some of my halloween mix favourites... dark, creepy electronica, bone crushing dub, and twisted scratch dj horror collages... and maybe some cheesy novelty business too although I'm sure there's plenty of that stuff goin' on elsewhere.

After almost 3 weeks of no internet due to some bill hassles and f*%king YAHOO JAPAN taking their sweet time re-connecting us, DRTY SHDWS is back. Today's post is a little random and hastily thrown together, but these are some tracks that always manage to find their way back into my mp3 player so I thought I'd share them with you.

I love MR OIZO's "ANALOGUE WORMS ATTACK" album. I think his best stuff is when he messes with big crunchy beats and this track from his "M-SEQ" ep definately fits into that category.

I shamelesley slept on the genius of MIKE PARADINAS aka MU-ZIQ for way too many years. This is my favourite track off his classic "LUNATIC HARNESS" album.

Like Mr PARADINAS, and obviously one of his peers, TOM JENKINSON is not one to stagnate and I was f#$king exstatic when his sound evolved into this... BASS + BEATS + BLEEPS have rarely been combined this well. I never get sick of this track.

Dutch Ragga/Breakcore fiend BONG-RA has been coming with all kinds of great production over the years but this bouncy, bass-heavy dancehall/jungle hybrid is by far my favourite.

(((0-0))) Ok... I finally got it uploaded. "NOW, LISTEN!" (original title, huh?) is another compilation tape. Basically just a bunch of great tracks I can't stop listening to this month. Half of them come from various blogs & message boards (check comments for link credits) & the other half are tracks I had on different albums & eps I picked up recently that were begging to be burned to cd. Most of these tracks are hybrid styles, mixing the best elements of hip-hop, electro, pop, house, 8-bit, broken beat, dancehall and whatever else sounds good. PIXEL BOMBING... DIGITAL GRAFF and GRAFFITI ANTHEMS

You may have seen the news about MARK ECKO's court victory over an NY City Beurocrat's attempt to stop the launch party for his new video game project with ATARI, "GETTING UP: CONTENTS UNDER PRESSURE" . They weren't happy about the idea of 20 famous graff artists bombing life-size replicas of NYC subway cars. The game looks kinda interesting, nice website too. Don't know too much about the soundtrack though.

This isn't the first time graff has come into the gaming world... most recently as a minigame in ROCKSTAR'S "GRAND THEFT AUTO: SAN ANDREAS" where you had to spray gang tags to mark territory...

And before that, in the awesome JET SET RADIO (a.k.a. JET GRIND RADIO) on DREAMCAST (R.I.P.) where you race around on jet powered rollerskates (yes I know it sounds whack) and bomb Tokyo's funkiest shopping districts to a crazy soundtrack. And the sequel JET SET RADIO FUTURE on X-BOX... Both these games are high on my list of greatest games of all time

Back in '88... if you had a COMMODORE or AMIGA computer you may have encountered the GRAFFITI MAN. If you follow the link you might notice the guy on the box art has an uncanny resemblance to ROB LOWE!!

It's nothing new for graff to get exploited by the game industry... and graphic designers have been biting graff styles for years. Everyone from Sprite to MTV has used graffiti-esque artwork to create a streetwise image. There's a medium budget Hollywood graffiti movie about to drop too..."BOMB THE SYSTEM". From the trailer I watched it looks like it could be pretty lame but... I'm gonna see it anyway, and EL-P is doing the soundtrack.

Hanayo is a Japanese performance artist / photographer / Geisha / model & sometimes TV show host who also makes music. I first heard her singing the brilliant and creepy "HALLO HITLER" track with PANACEA on german label MILLE PLATEAUX'S "ELECTRIC LADYLAND 5" compilation in the late-nineties. Then she did a whole LP with him called "HANAYO IN PANACEA". Her vocals range from harsh screaming to whispering to ultra-cute j-pop... you can hear a little of all 3 in this industrial-space-funk track...

She also released an album on ALEC EMPIRE's DHR sub-label GEIST called "GIFT"featuring collaborations with PATRIC CATANI, CONSOLE, CHRISTOPH DE BABALON, MERZBOW and others, the most well known of which (thanks to the 2MANYDJ'S series) is actually the hidden track... a cover version of "JOE LE TAXI" produced by JURGEN PAAPE... the big fat bass underneath her sugary sweet vocals was an instant classic...

Last year I stumbled accross this... an 8-Bit-esque remix by CONSOLE of her cover version of the Japanese national anthem "KIMI GA YO" where the vocals sound like they were recorded over the phone. Absolutely awesome... this tune is so catchy it's hard to believe it's a national anthem.

OK, so I killed my crossfader doing wack transformer scratches in my bedroom last month after watching too many dj Q-Bert movies but I wanted to put some kind of mix up on here. Many years ago, before I had a computer or a mixer, I used to sit on the floor of my room making compilation tapes for hours... I even had it figured just right how to wind the tape back a couple centimetres between recording each song for a seemless blend between tracks... why? um.... anyway... more confessions of a bad bedroom dj wannabe some other time. This cd is a bunch of pop-dancehall-hip-hop tracks I like to bump on a hot summer's day... put together in a compilation tape style... some editing and some attempts at getting the next beat to kick in at a point that makes sense without any actual mixing. Most of them are from the last year or so and a few were doing the rounds of the blogisphere for a while (alternative bad title "I know what u blogged last summer" ugh!). It's kinda my version of one of those 2004 reggae gold type compilations but it's more dancehall meets hip-hop style and (hopefully) it's alot better so check the tracklist (yep, that's right, 4 Sean Paul tracks...) and if you like what you see hit the downoad link below. Every summer all over Japan there are hundreds of huge fireworks festivals called HANABI. Literally translated, HANABI means FLOWER FIRE. Last year I went to one of the most famous Hanabi in Tokyo at Sumida River... I stood (no chance of sitting) amongst 10,000+ people, completely in awe for 90 minutes as the most beautiful fireworks display I've ever seen exploded across the night sky. It was truly magical... that feeling of child-like wonder overtook and my brain almost drowned in endorphins. Today's track captures that feeling almost perfectly. The opening track from pt 1 of Aleksi Perälä's ASTROBOTNIA EP series is as close as anyone's ever gonna get to Sonic Hanabi. Close your eyes and let your brain do the rest...

Last up is a track by one of my favourite REPHLEX artists, OVUCA, off his 70-odd track album ONCLEMENTS. An amazing collection of bedroom electronic tracks from this FINNISH genius from a few years before he blew my mind with his ASTROBOTNIA project. This one's suitably bleepy to finish with even though it's not really about games.

Keeping on the game theme for now here's a few tracks devoted to some arcade favourites. First up is the NEXTMEN's awesome "HI-SCORE" off their album "GET OVER IT"... I first heard this track on Boom Selection about a year and a half ago... MC Dynamite rhyming about dropping coins and hitting buttons over some great production and arcade atmospherics. The album also features a great dancehall style bass monster of a track with CUTTY RANKS called "SILENT WEAPON"

Next up is Slim Thug's PACMAN BEAT... a kinda slow crunked out beat with those big wokka wokka Pac-Sounds over the top, similar to SUPER BROOKLYN. A little more repetitive but worth a listen.

Last one is GALAXY DEFENDERS from the COMPUTOR ROCKERS album of the same name on BREAKIN' RECORDS. I love this album... Ed DMX making old-school electro bass tracks and this one's a tribute to Galaga, one of my alltime favourite arcade games. I cant wait to hear more of his COLLAPSE OF THE WAVE FUNCTION tracks on REPHLEX either.

Last but not least is crazy French hip-hopping club danceurs, TTC's mario sampling "GAME OVER '99". This one's off one of their 12"s before they signed to BIG DADA. Great track although I have no idea what he's actually rhyming about.
